Some welfare recipients do not have to perform work activities. If you fall into one ore more of the following categories, you may be granted an exemption from the Work Experience Program (WEP).
You may be exempt from the Work Experience Program if you are:
Age 60 and over
Under Age 16
Under age 19 and in school
Physically or mentally ill or disabled
Needed in the home to care for a household member who is mentally or physically ill or disabled, as verified by a doctor or psychologist
In a one-parent household, a three month exemption from work to care for a child under twelve months. A household can receive this exemption for a lifetime total of no more than 12 months. (Note: If you and/or your BEGIN/Job Center cannot find appropriate child care for your young child, you cannot be forced into a work activity. See Fact Sheet No. 17, What to Do When You are Unable to Find Appropriate Childcare.)
8 months pregnant (You will be exempt only for the last 30 days of your pregnancy. However, if your doctor provides a note that you are unable to work during your pregnancy and after giving birth, you may be exempted for a longer time period.)
Domestic violence Victim: If you and/or your children are in danger, tell your worker!
NOTE:
You may be asked to prove that you qualify for an exemption from work activities by providing written documentation to your Job Center/BEGIN/OES. See separate Fact Sheet No. 15, Proving Your Entitlement to an Exemption From The Work Requirements Because of Your Illness or Disability.
