NORTH BROOKLYN
WE CAN
What is WE CAN?
The North Brooklyn Welfare Education & Community Advocacy Network (WE CAN) was founded in 1996 in response to the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), also known as "welfare reform." Formed by a coalition of community-based groups, WE CAN is dedicated to the struggle for justice, equality, and real opportunities for people receiving public assistance. By launching educational campaigns, expanding community resources, and organizing advocacy workshops throughout the community, WE CAN provides both services and support to neighborhood residents who need a safety net and those struggling to move from welfare to work.
